Technical description of a Swingline Stapler

Swingline Stapler

Introduction

A swingline stapler is a mechanical object that joins paper together by using a thin metal staple that attaches the pages. Swingline staplers are used at schools, workplaces, and homes. The dimensions of a swingline stapler are approximately 7 inches long, 1.5 inches wide, and 2 inches tall.

Parts and Procedure

Although a stapler is a very simple device it consists of various parts. The bottom of the stapler is called a base which keeps the stapler stable on surfaces.  Another part on the stapler is the head (top of the stapler) which is connected to the metal magazine. The magazine is the metal part which holds the staples (located in the inside). The head and base are connected by a hangar. An additional part is the pin located at the back of the stapler, the pin allows the head to move up and down to load the magazine with staples. On the inside there are two springs, one of the springs’ purpose is to push the staples down the magazine to reload and the other spring pulls the stapler head back allowing the stapler to return to its original position. Nevertheless, there is a metal plate located on the base known as the anvil, the anvil is where the staple is forced into resulting in the bend of the staple that secures pages together.

To use the stapler, first you load the magazine. The spring will push the staples toward the front. Then you place your pages under the magazine and push the head down creating pressure. When doing so the spring pushes the staples forward and dispenses a staple and it’s forced against the anvil resulting in the ends of the staple to bend inwards. Finally, your pages are stapled, the stapler completed its function being to insert staples into pieces of paper.

Conclusion

This amazing invention the swingline stapler is, it is used worldwide to secure pages together. Although it looks like such a simple object it is made up of several parts. When stapling documents, you might not realize how many things are occurring within the stapler in a matter of seconds. Every part making up the stapler having its own function. Major components of the outer shell of the stapler being the base and head. The inside components being the two springs, magazine, and hangar. The pin being a combining accessory, allows the head to move up and down to load the magazine with staples. Lastly the anvil (metal plate) located on the base. All these parts coming together to allow the user of the stapler to join pages by the use of a staple.
